BACK TO SAVINGS: HOSTING A CHRISTMAS PARTY

Back to Savings: Hosting a Christmas Party

You've made your list, you've checked it twice and you have decided to gather your dearest friends for a special evening of food, drink, laughter and fun. As much as you want to save money you also don't want to be perceived as a boring host. Here are some tips to make your Christmas Party beautiful, fun and affordable.

~ Use what you’ve got ~

One of the keys to a great Christmas party is atmosphere. You want the right colours, the proper lighting and a sense of sophistication. Don't rush out to your local party store! Linens, napkins and decorations can get expensive and once in the store you will be tempted to splurge on the "little touches" that you don't necessarily need. Start looking through your cupboards and drawers to see what you already have and create a theme idea from it.

Looking at your Christmas tree and the decorations on it will be a good indicator of the colour theme you want.  Consider removing some of the excess decorations from the tree and making a centerpiece for your table or place them haphazardly along the center line of the table for some colour. Wrap candles in matching ribbons to pull the look together. Unless you already have them, don't bother with plate chargers. Instead, consider using oversized napkins. Remember that a chic, minimalist look is in style so don’t feel inclined to have a million decorations.

~ Collaborate the symphony ~

Music is just as important to creating the atmosphere as is decorations. Find a radio station that is playing only Christmas music or borrow CDs from family and friends a few days before the party and create your own mix.

~ Pot Luck ~

When you send out your e-vite, ensure you specify "No Gifts Please". Instead, ask each person attending to bring a salad or dessert. Enlist your best friends to help you by bringing the sides for the main course or a bottle of wine to serve at the meal. Be responsible for the main course. Make sure you double check what everyone is bringing a few days in advance.

~ Party Favours ~

If you want that special touch, something your guests will always remember from your party, use your computer to make each guest a CD of Christmas Music. Use your creative flair (or your child's creative flair if you don't have any) to design a stylish CD cover that you can print out and place with each CD. Your guests will love the special touch and will think of you whenever they listen to it.

Now all you have to do is send out the invites and enjoy your party.
